This poignant story finds the young Gozzi forced into a life of lonely seclusion because her embittered father, ex-judge Douglas, can no longer cope with the strain of his existence. Gozzi's only real companions are her maid, Lindblom, and the scarecrow which the young girl dresses as if it were a man. Escaped fugitive Stockwell comes to the farmhouse seeking aid, which Douglas offers out of his hatred for the law. Gozzi soon grows so deeply attached to Stockwell that when she finds him making love to Lindblom she threatens to kill the maid. But Lindblom leaves, allowing Stockwell and Gozzi to fall in love and flee to Paris. The hectic city, however, proves too much for the girl. She makes her way back to her father, and as Stockwell follows he is gunned down by the police. The shaky direction of this film depends too heavily on jarring camera angles and movements, and paces the development of the plot much too slowly, severely marring an unusual love story. leave a comment
