This poignant story finds the young Gozzi forced into a life of lonely seclusion because her embittered father, ex-judge Douglas, can no longer cope with the strain of his existence. Gozzi's only real companions are her maid, Lindblom, and the scarecrow which the young girl dresses as if it were a man. Escaped fugitive Stockwell comes to the farmhouse seeking aid, which Douglas offers out of his hatred for the law.
