One of a number of films to exploit rap music, this moderately entertaining entry features Mario Van Peebles as John Hood, a rapping ex-con who is determined to go straight. After his release from jail John learns that his girl friend, Dixie (Tasia Valenza), has taken up with Duane (Charles Flohe), a member of a rival gang who warns John to keep away. Naturally, John does nothing of the kind; nor does he avoid confronting Thorndike (Harry Goz), the evil contractor who is planning to tear down the entire neighborhood. When Thorndike hires Duane's gang to help evict the tenants, John leads his own group in trouncing the bad guys. He rallies his neighbors in opposition to Thorndike's scheming with a rousing rap at a community meeting, winning a record contract and Dixie's affection in the process. Hardly a cinematic masterpiece, RAPPIN' nonetheless has a lot of energy and a few good musical interludes. leave a comment
