This big-budget action film is yet another chapter in the canonization of muscle-bound Sylvester Stallone, who has made a career of selling himself as "America's Hero" by playing the same two characters, Rocky and Rambo, over and over. RAMBO, the sequel to his surprisingly successful FIRST BLOOD, was the pinnacle of what has come to be known as the Vietnam War fantasy film--movies that feature a small band of heroic American commandos reentering Vietnam and winning decisive battles (UNCOMMON VALOR and the Chuck Norris "Missing in Action" films were among the most popular). After venting his anger against the "system" by single-handedly destroying an entire American town, vet John Rambo (Stallone) is offered a chance to get out of prison if he will accept an assignment to return to Vietnam covertly and obtain evidence that will prove that American POWs are still being held. Rambo accepts the proposal, parachutes into Vietnam, and hooks up with Co Bao (Julia Nickson), a beautiful Vietnamese freedom fighter who serves as his guide. Rambo locates a camp chock-full of American POWs, then battles both Vietnamese Communists and their evil Soviet advisers to free his countrymen. The image of the sweaty, muscular superhero, with gunbelts draped over his bulging biceps, caught on big with the public, and a rash of Rambo toys, games, posters, clothing, and even a children's cartoon show (though children should be kept away from this film) hit the market with a vengeance. All in all, it's a pretty offensive movie, especially to the Americans who fought in Vietnam. Nominated for Best Sound Effects Editing Oscar. leave a comment
