Keith is the real standout in this western--originally intended as a pilot for a television series but instead released through theaters. He plays a former Confederate Army officer, now a Texas cattle rancher, who is forced by Northern carpetbaggers to abandon his herds and wage war against the railroad. The railroad executives hire the likes of Wild Bill Hickok (Culp), Buffalo Bill Cody (McMullan), and Calamity Jane (Meredith) to defend their interests against Keith and his band of railroad marauders. Just when it looks as though the Army is about to slaughter Keith and his gang, Culp, McMullan, and Meredith intervene and save them. With their help, Keith and his followers are able to convince the railroad executives to build a line down to their ranches in Texas, and all is forgiven. Although the script is a bit trite and the production tends to betray its TV origins (library stock footage is badly overused), the actors seem to have had a good time making the film and their enthusiasm shines through. leave a comment
