The hopelessly inconsistent Richard Burton once again wanders aimlessly through a project beneath his talents in RAID ON ROMMEL. This time he plays British commando Capt. Alec Foster, stationed in North Africa during WW II, who leads a group of commandos on a mission to get behind the German lines and destroy their big guns so that the Brits can attack. To do this, Foster and company allow themselves to be captured and interred in a POW camp, making it a fairly simple matter to escape and blow up the artillery. Dully directed by veteran helmsman Henry Hathaway in the twilight of his career, RAID ON ROMMEL is a would-be desert epic that lifts exciting footage from the vastly superior TOBRUK (1967). Unfortunately, these pilfered action scenes are far and away the most interesting part of the movie, and if you've seen TOBRUK, you've already seen the best that RAID ON ROMMEL has to offer. leave a comment
