Big-city romance turns ugly when this frothy comedy of manners from writer-director Roland Tec suddenly goes LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR. Richard (John-Michael Lander) is a perfect example of what is, in certain circles, known as a "guppie": The "g" stands for "gay," the rest you already know. In the same circles, Richard might also be described as a catch, if there were anyone perfect enough to lure him in: Young, good-looking, well-off and sporting the kind of body only daily trips to the gym can produce, Richard is on the lookout for someone pretty much like himself, only more so. But all his high standards have gotten him is a series depressing one-nights stands, a card-file full of numbers he never calls and an answering machine overloaded with callbacks he ignores. All the more surprising, then, that Richard should fall head over heels for Stewart (David Vincent), a slightly pudgy, underpaid book editor who may turn out to be Christopher's unlikely Mr. Right. Set in Boston's trendy South End, Tec takes a few welcome pokes at the superficial body-image obsessions of '90s gay culture. But for a film that claims to critique such values, its cast spends an awful lot of time lolling about in their underwear. By the end it hardly matters: After losing its way about two-thirds of the way through, the film winds up pointing in an entirely different -- and much nastier -- direction. The abrupt shift in tone doesn't spoil what's good about this perceptive and often funny film, but it does come as such a shock you may have a little trouble recalling any of it. Kudos to Tec for not asking his audience to swallow yet another artificial happy ending; demerits for scaring the pants off of them. leave a comment --Ken Fox
