A good cast, headed by Scott, and decent direction from veteran helmsman Whelan save this unevenly scripted western that purportedly details the pursuit of an infamous gang of cutthroats, the Reno Brothers (Tucker, Naish, and Healey). Scott plays a special agent hired by a Chicago law office to capture the renegade gang. Scott goes under cover and poses as a train robber to win the gang's confidence, but he falls in love with their sister, Powers, which complicates things. Not only is the unplanned romance unsettling, but the fact that the Reno boys have insulated themselves from prosecution through a variety of legal loopholes and payoffs to politicians makes Scott's job all the more difficult. Eventually he is forced to entrap the gang in a train robbery he has planned, and hauls them in for that crime. When Tucker, Naish, and Healey are brought to town for trial, the populace goes mad with blood lust, forms a mob, and lynches the criminals without benefit of jurisprudence. This gives Scott and the scriptwriters a chance to wax eloquent on the subject of mob violence, a la THE OXBOW INCIDENT. leave a comment
