Fans of European-style road racing will appreciate this look at the lives of those daredevils who make their way around the tracks of France, Italy, and Germany. Helmed by veteran action director Henry Hathaway, THE RACERS was the first big-budget Hollywood treatment of motor racing, and its very exciting racing footage almost compensates for the slim plot. Kirk Douglas stars as the Italian Gino, whose ambition to become a champion racer overrides all scruples. He becomes involved with Nicole (Bella Darvi), and with her money is able to get a car and win a big race. He is soon one of the top dogs on the tour, but is hurt in a crash. The next year finds him on crutches but still following the tour, and when his colleague Dell'Oro (Gilbert Roland) needs a codriver for Le Mans, Gino signs on, taking over the wheel and winning the race when Dell'Oro is unable to continue. Now Gino steadily moves up in rank, but his ruthlessness soon loses him his fellow drivers' respect, as well as Nicole. In the climax, Gino gives up his chance to win a big race in order to save the injured Dell'Oro. Although the actors never left California, the film is filled with European locations that add to its appeal. leave a comment
