Take the basic "young athlete shooting for an impossible dream" formula, plug it into Grand Prix motorcycle racing, and you have this standard sports film directed by Rocky Lang. Cody Gifford (Alex McArthur) is a small-town motorcycle racer with a big-time ambition: he wants to take his American-built bike, along with his mechanic and best friend (Peter Berg), to Europe and compete with the Japanese"rice burners" on the Grand Prix circuit there. Can he do it, and can he beat his hot-shot riding nemesis in the Grand Prix finals? Is the director's first name Rocky? Rest assured that America loses no honors in RACE FOR GLORY. Replete with hackneyed situations, two-dimensional characters, and some wild stretching of credibility, the film's appeal is purely visceral, though even the exciting race sequences are weakened by our confidence that RACE FOR GLORY will not deviate from sports-movie cliche. leave a comment
