Rabbit Test: Review

This story, directed and cowritten by Joan Rivers, had been done before and somewhat better by Frenchman Jacques Demy in the 1973 film A SLIGHTLY PREGNANT MAN (also known as THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT EVENT SINCE MAN WALKED ON THE MOON). Rivers' film is a series of one-liners about Crystal, who is engaged to Prather and becomes pregnant. Not her, him. This, of course, makes him a very well-known person in the eyes of the world, to the dismay of his mother, Roberts, who is a parody of every Jewish mother ever seen in movies. Along the way, the film takes shots at Poles, physicians, parenthood, motion pictures, religion (Fletcher portrays the Pope), politics (Gobel is the US President and Flagg is the First Lady; how's that for a parlay?), homosexuals, obesity, and anything else Rivers might have had in her copious joke file. Rocco turns in a good performance as a former Vietnam veteran who is now an agent, and nightclub comic Walker, footballer Grier, and improvisational comic Gelman deliver a few funny moments. McDowall, Lynde, Matheson, Coca, Rae, Poston, and Ghostley are wasted. Despite the scathing reviews and bad word of mouth, the picture made lots of money, though Rivers, who had a cameo in the film, gave up directing. Her husband produced it, and their teenage daughter, Melissa, gets credit as the associate producer. leave a comment
