In the lush forests of northern California, marijuana planters control an entire community through a combination of money and terror. As the film opens, a surveyor leads the corrupt sheriff (Jared Martin) to the site of one dope patch, but when they get there, the hapless surveyor is killed. The murder is witnessed by Joshua Greer (Adam Coleman Howard), who runs back to tell his parents, but the killers are after him. They kill his mother and father, then toss Joshua off a cliff. Back in town, Joshua's aunt (Daphne Ashbrook) gets worried and calls New York cop Joe Dillon (James Remar), her former lover. He immediately flies out and starts investigating, ignoring the sheriff's warnings. Marijuana growers have actually taken over some remote parts of the US, and it is surprising that no one made a film on the subject before. Almost as surprising is that QUIET COOL is as good as it is. Well cut and superbly photographed, the film did only mediocre business in a limited distribution, emerging on cassette just a few months after release. leave a comment
