QUICKSILVER isn't a movie. It's actually a series of rock videos occasionally interrupted by a slight dalliance with story progression. The premise is wholly fabricated, the style is pure MTV, and the characters are all pressed from Hollywood cliche cutters. Jack Casey (Kevin Bacon), a successful stock trader, manages to lose a fortune on the market. He decides to drop out of yuppiedom and take up a working-class trade. He gets a job working with the Quicksilver Messenger Service, a bicycle courier outfit. Of course, all is not sunshine and light. One of the messengers, Rodriguez (Paul Rodriguez), dreams of opening his own hot dog stand but lacks the funds. And Gypsy (Rudy Ramos), a nefarious drug dealer, occasionally uses Quicksilver messengers to run dope for him. There are a number of problems with QUICKSILVER, such as the patronizing attitudes it holds towards its working-class characters. Bacon is not much more than passable in a role that only requires him to look handsome and occasionally furrow his brow. Most of the other actors merely go through the motions. Only Rodriguez gives his part any life, though it's a wasted effort on a stereotyped character. But then QUICKSILVER isn't about human conflict, it's about making money. leave a comment
