De Bresson is the 15-year-old son of pastor Gwynn. He lives in East Germany where the Communist Party denies education to those who don't hold "politically correct views," which include an anti-religion stance. Before he can enter the music conservatory, De Bresson must answer seven questions, the last of which asks for a major influence on his life. Knowing that it is religion and that he must deny his beliefs to get into the conservatory, De Bresson asks his friends for advice. His teacher encourages the boy to make the politically correct decision, while his girl friend and father tell him to stick to his principles. The Communist Party gives him a chance to perform in the Berlin Youth Festival, which De Bresson gladly accepts despite Gwynn's protests. But upon arrival he sees that he is merely a pawn in a political game. The party wants him as an example to prove that those with religious beliefs are treated equally under their rule. Disgusted with Communism, De Bresson leaves the festival and escapes to freedom in the West. This is obvious propaganda. The story has enough dramatic content in and of itself but is reduced to stereotypes and a "good versus evil" mentality. The direction is slow, but gives the film a handsome look. This film was invited to the Berlin Film Festival for its heavy anti-Communist messages and was filmed on location in that city. leave a comment
