A tough, realistic thriller which poses the interesting moral question: is murder ever justified? Hartnell, in a distinguished performance as a young stevedore and then as a prematurely aged ex-convict, is sentenced to prison for a murder he did not commit. On his release, he kills the man who framed him, and then must make plausible the legal right to have done so. The script closely resembles a silent Fox film, IT IS THE LAW (1924), but clearly holds its own with outstanding acting and direction. The one blight that mars the picture involves its authorship. "Seamark," the man credited with writing the story from which the script was taken and a well-known newspaperman around Fleet Street before he commited suicide in 1935, was suspected of having lifted the tale with only slight embellishments from Elmer Rice and Hayden Talbot's hit stage play of the early 1920s, "It Is the Law," on which Fox based its film with proper credits. leave a comment
