Queen High: Review
Ruggles and Morgan are partners in a garter business who disagree over who should be running things. They finally decide that the winner of their poker hand will take charge for a year, and the loser will become the winner's butler. Rogers, in her second film (reteaming her with Ruggles, but in a secondary role) is the ingenue who's romantically and musically attached to Smith, Ruggles' son. This is an amusing little programmer, based on a Broadway musical comedy which, in turn, was based on a 1917 play. The lead comedians really make this film work. In lesser hands, their bickering would have come off as silly, rather than good-natured fun. The direction (by silent comedian Harold Lloyd's director) is a little sluggish, but keeps the story moving and gives the comedians a free reign. Rogers isn't bad, though she serves as little more than decoration. Advance publicity for QUEEN HIGH had indicated the film would be shot entirely in Technicolor. Songs include: "Everything Will Happen for the Best" (B.G. DeSylva, Lewis Gensler; sung by Rogers, Morgan), "Brother, Just Laugh It Off" (Arthur Schwartz, Ralph Rainger; sung by Rogers, Morgan), "It Seems to Me," "I'm Afraid of You" (Dick Howard, Rainger; sung by Rogers, Smith), "I Love the Girls in My Own Peculiar Way" (E.Y. Harburg, Henry Souvain; sung by Ruggles).
