QUEEN BEE is a fairly interesting character study of a dominating, manipulative woman played by Crawford. Though she's outwardly the embodiment of charm and love, the truth is she's insidious and rotten. She is married to wealthy mill owner Sullivan, and they live in a huge Georgia mansion where Sullivan spends most of his time nipping from the bottle and drinking himself to sleep because he sees right through Crawford and despises her. Marlow, a cousin from New York, comes to stay a while with Crawford and Sullivan and is taken in by Crawford's apparent lovableness. However, it isn't long before she spots Crawford for what she is. Sullivan's sister, Palmer, is due to be married to the man who manages the estate, Ireland, and Crawford does what she can to stop that union because she and Ireland had once been lovers and she can't bear the thought of him sleeping with anyone else. To that end, she attempts to get Ireland back into her hive again. Palmer finds out that Ireland and Crawford once had an affair and kills herself (a bit of an overreaction, since the script fails to develop her motivation). Crawford plays mind games with Sullivan, but his disdain is so evident that Crawford is frustrated. Meanwhile, Marlow and Sullivan find a great deal in common and love grows between them. Crawford tries her darndest to break up this liaison, but Ireland, who has finally had it with Crawford and is still mourning his one true love, takes matters into his own hands (and feet). He asks Crawford to go for a drive with him and she readily accepts, thinking that they might be able to recapture their old passion. But on this seemingly harmless automobile excursion Ireland reckons his life is worthless without Palmer and crashes the car, killing himself and Crawford (audiences cheered), and leaving the path clear for Sullivan and Marlow. In a small role, note King Kong's beloved, Fay Wray. Cinematographer Lang received an Oscar nomination for his work in this film, as did Louis for his costume design. leave a comment
