Quatermass II

1957, Movie, NR, 84 mins

Attempting to investigate a report of a strange meteorite shower in a nearby community, Doctor Quatermass (Donlevy) finds the whole area cordoned off by the authorities--and a strange collection of pressure domes. It turns out that the meteorites have brought with them tiny organisms from space, which in turn have taken over human bodies and are building the pressure domes to house a host of aliens waiting out in space. Donlevy discovers that the aliens have also taken over a number of government officials and the Commissioner of Scotland Yard. Finally he rallies the townspeople--who are disgruntled because they aren't getting the jobs at what they believe to be a government construction project--to attack the domes and pump in air to kill the aliens. This, the second film in the Quatermass trilogy, is definitely the best and very similar to INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, released the previous year. If anything, ENEMY FROM SPACE is even more paranoid than Don Siegel's film; here the conspiracy to take over the Earth reaches into the highest levels of the government. This is one of the best science-fiction films ever to come from Britain. Sequel: FIVE MILLION YEARS TO EARTH. leave a comment
