Taxicab driver Loren's son, Ponti (her real-life son in his film debut), is nearly blind. To restore his failing vision, an expensive operation is required. His doting mother, doggedly determined that her son shall have the surgery, decides to try a form of extortion. She rents a trailer and, with Ponti, heads north, attempting to trace three of her one-time lovers, hoping to persuade each in turn that he is the boy's father so that they will all contribute cash to restore Ponti's eyesight. In Naples, they fail to find one of the three, an American helicopter pilot (Travanti, star of TV's "Hill Street Blues") who has been reassigned. In Rome, they are more fortunate, gaining both cash and a valuable painting from another ex-lover, a dentist. In Tuscany, Loren learns that the third former flame--a count--has terminally evaded his many creditors by committing suicide. The count's charming son, however, helps her sell the painting. In Courmayeur, Loren finds the helicopter pilot, whom she truly loves, but their reunion is stormy and they soon part. Proceeding to a Swiss medical facility for the lad's operation, Loren and Ponti have a touching scene together when the boy's bandages are removed and she becomes aware that her nestling is no longer entirely dependent on her. The sound of a helicopter suggests that her flier may be returning at the film's finale. The picture is a family affair; producer Alex Ponti is Loren's stepson. Released under the title QUALCOSA DI BIONDI in Italy, this film was shown on US television as AURORA. leave a comment
