Syms and Ritchie play two aging nightclub hostesses sharing an apartment. Ritchie is an extrovert who's fascinated with and attracted to a variety of men, while her companion exudes a cynicism that protects her vulnerable self. The two become quite dependent on one another. Syms, hardened by her own failures with men, becomes angry when her companion gets involved with Judd. He's a wealthy businessman, separated from his wife and controlled by his father. Ritchie insists that Judd prove his love, and the man responds by getting her a job in the family business. His father is angered with Judd's defiance. Syms' father, a country schoolteacher, comes for a visit. Relations between the two are strained, and she tries to shock him by telling about her sordid life. He leaves, and Syms tearfully tells Ritchie that she's somehow gotten pregnant. Ritchie refuses to abandon her friend and cancels a trip to the Bahamas with Judd. Judd finally leaves his wife for good and implores Ritchie to come with him. But she drunkenly taunts him, sending him on his way. Ritchie attempts suicide but realizes that her place is with Syms. This is a somewhat stylized film, but the story is too depressing to make it work in the long run. leave a comment
