Pushing Hands

1992, Movie, NR, 100 mins

Director Ang Lee (THE WEDDING BANQUET, EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN) calls this 1991 film the first part of his "father knows best" trilogy. Like the other films, it's a comedy of intergenerational conflict among Taiwanese immigrants. Mr. Chu (Sihung Lung) is a tai chi master who moves in with his married son (Bo Z. Wang) in Yonkers, unintentionally disrupting domestic tranquility. Passably charming on its own terms, PUSHING HANDS still feels too much like a discarded prototype of EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN. leave a comment
