The Pursuit Of Happiness: Review

Sarrazin plays an alienated social drop-out who accidentally runs over a woman in a rain storm. Though he can prove it was an accident, Sarrazin refuses to cooperate with "the establishment," and is sentenced to a year in prison. There he gets involved in a knifing and manages to escape. He looks up his old girlfriend, Hershey, and the two fly off to Canada. This is a well-played drama with some sincere performances by Sarrazin and Hershey. Klein, a noted stand-up comedian, provides some humor as the hippie buddy. The plot, however, is full of illogical actions, and the dialog used by the "young people" was already dated at the time of this shooting. Sarrazin's indifference to his sentencing is completely unbelievable, especially his escape with only a week left to serve. The direction is good, however, giving the film a nice forward movement without cluttering the story. White, who played Sarrazin's grandmother, died following the film's completion.
