In THE PURPLE PLAIN, Peck is back in his rightful milieu, cast as a man who is having trouble fighting inner turmoil and just as much difficulty with what's happening around him. Peck had been married to Griffin, but when she dies in a London air raid on their wedding night, he blames himself (this is shown in a flashback to the early years of the war).
