The Purple Plain

In THE PURPLE PLAIN, Peck is back in his rightful milieu, cast as a man who is having trouble fighting inner turmoil and just as much difficulty with what's happening around him. Peck had been married to Griffin, but when she dies in a London air raid on their wedding night, he blames himself (this is shown in a flashback to the early years of the war). It's now 1945 and Peck is in Burma, where he is a pilot. (Actually, the picture was shot in Ceylon--now Sri Lanka.) Peck is taking fellow officer Denham to a routine destination, accompanied by his navigator, Brook. Their plane crashes in the jungle and Brook is hurt.
