Forty years before Anthony Minghella adapted The Talented Mr. Ripley into a homoerotic fantasia of indentity and desire, French director Rene Clair had his way with Patricia Highsmith's classic suspense novel. Here, the dashing Alain Delon plays a very different kind of Mr. Ripley, a suave American of no means who's asked to bring Philippe Greenleaf (Maurice Ronet), the son of a wealthy San Francisco patriarch, back from Italy.
