In the late 1960s, television had a completely ridiculous Saturday morning kid show called "H.R. Pufnstuf." It featured live actors coupled with giant puppets and hopelessly insipid jokes. These elements were trademarks for the show's producers, the Krofft brothers. PUFNSTUF is a film version of the show featuring most of the TV cast. The story has young Wild take his talking magic flute to a magic land where objects, plants, and animals can speak. There they meet Pufnstuf, a nice dragon, the island's mayor. The simplistic plot has Hayes (in the only good performance--a delightful chunk of ham) stealing the magic flute so she can be named "Witch of the Year" at the annual Witches Convention. Wild and his new friends go to her castle to rescue the flute. Raye and Cass (of the rock group "the Mamas and the Papas") play a pair of fellow witches. This film is aimed directly at the under ten set, and they'll probably enjoy it. Songs include "Pufnstuf," "Angel Raid," "Charge," "Fire in the Castle," "Happy Hour," "Leaving Living Island," "Rescue Racer to the Rescue," "Witchiepoo's Lament," and "Different." leave a comment
