In this cheapie from Louisiana, John King plays Wheeler, a stranger in town who teams up with Slick (Tommy Lamey), a local outcast. Together they kidnap a wealthy, retired oilman (Herschell Mays) and hold him for ransom. In flashback we see Wheeler's childhood, during which he's beaten by his mother, providing the psychological underpinnings of his present sociopathic bahavior. The film is crudely shot, with little attention to continuity, and the flashbacks are amateurishly grafted onto the story. The inept acting is further hampered by southern accents that are thick as molasses. Worst of all are the racist values that result in blacks being shown as subservient stereotypes. The film was shot in 1974 and went through various title changes (including WHEELER, THE MAMA'S BOY, and THE HURTING) before being released some eight years after completion. leave a comment
