Robeson plays a stoker working in a Welsh coal town, where he's gotten the job through the efforts of Chapman, anxious to enlist Robeson's voice in the local choir. When a disaster kills Chapman and leaves the town facing starvation, Robeson risks his own life to save the mine. A gas leak has left remnants inside the mine.
