The Proud Ones

Ryan plays the toughened marshal in a town where all hell is about to break loose with the coming of the railroad and the cattle drives to follow. His main adversary is Middleton, the local saloon keeper, who sees the opportunity to make a lot of money. Hunter plays the son of a man whom Ryan killed in the course of duty. At first wanting to wreak vengeance against the marshal, the misdirected Hunter learns to respect the ways of Ryan, eventually helping him in his fight against the town's roughnecks. Script and direction are evenly paced to provide a suspenseful and climactic finish, with Ryan giving his role the necessary hardness.
