A gloomy horror movie with apocalyptic pretensions, THE PROPHECY takes a delightfully jaundiced approach to religious iconography. Tough cop Tommy Dagget (Elias Koteas), who studied for the priesthood but lost his faith as he was about to be ordained, investigates a grisly murder and finds himself on the trail of evil angels -- the kind who carry out God's orders to slaughter the firstborn sons of unbelievers. Dark and ambitious, THE PROPHECY is simultaneously gory and bitterly satirical -- not a combination that appeals to everyone -- but casting carries the day. Christopher Walken was born to play a fallen angel and Eric Stolz is surprisingly affecting as a marginally less wicked celestial spirit. But the surprise star turn comes from Viggo Mortenson, playing a suspiciously helpful Lucifer. leave a comment
