Though deeply devout Christians will no doubt be dismayed by this odd horror film's blasphemous conception of angels, it's hard to imagine anyone else getting excited about it. As disillusioned young evangelist Danyael Morales (Dave Buzzotta) preaches to his soup kitchen congregation about God's indifference to human suffering, a lunatic (Brad Dourif) shoots him dead. At the morgue, the coroner (Steve Hytner) tells Danyael's girlfriend, Maggie (Kayren Ann Butler), that Danyael was no ordinary proselytizer — he's risen from the dead! Moreover, someone murdered Danyael's mother when he was a child, but failed to kill him. Only the fallen angel Gabriel (Christopher Walken) and his arch-enemy, Zophael (Vincent Spano), know the truth about Danyael's origins: He's part-human and part angelic being. Kindly Gabriel (who was the villain in the previous two PROPHECY films) protects Danyael, but Zophael intends to kill him before he head off the second coming of the Dark Angels, which is being spearheaded by Pyriel (Scott Cleverdon); Pyriel regards himself as God's replacement. Danyael goes into hiding while Gabriel and Zophael debate their philosophical differences beating the bejabbers out of each other. Unable to control Danyael, Zophael kidnaps Maggie for leverage and tries to persuade her to betray Danyael for his own good. Good and evil meet on consecrated Native American ground, where Pyriel plans to stage his revolutionary strike against mankind. Danyael decides it's his destiny to do battle with Zophael, but loses confidence in himself when Maggie's van crashes nearby. While she lies dying, Danyael calls upon his shaky faith to vanquish both Zophael and Pyriel. But Danyael must still find out whether he's angel enough to defeat the heretical seraphim and man enough to save Maggie. Walken has always been the highlight of the PROPHECY films, striding through their theological absurdities with shoulder-length hair and all the gravel-voiced cynicism he can muster. But even his valiant efforts aren't enough to salvage this preposterous picture from the second-sequel doldrums. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
