Project Viper: Review
Once again, scientists learn that there are some things with which man was not meant to tamper; the movie which enlightens them provides never a dull moment and nary a memorable one. Dr. Nancy Burnham (Theresa Russell) heads a lab team that has married gene microbiology with computer chips. For purposes of space research, they have bred Viper, a super oxidant species capable of living on Mars. However, the noble experiment fails on two fronts, both involving prototypes of the artificially created creature. When its capsule cracks open in outer space, the first Viper starts feasting on astronaut flesh. Meanwhile, home on Earth, international crooks steal the second prototype from Novagen Corporation, and the theft may involve one of Dr. Burnham's researchers working in cahoots with a highly placed US official. NASA calls in special agent Mike Connors (Patrick Muldoon), but the thieves have already carted off the bio-engineered brainchild by plane. Unfortunately, that plane crashes in Mexico and Viper quickly adapts to life on Earth. Connors reluctantly teams up with Dr. Burnham to locate the artificial monster before it can procreate. The intelligent and adaptable Viper, meanwhile, slithers into a Texas border town with a history of illness linked to radiation. Attracted to the taint of uranium, the creature chows down on the locals. Sheriff Morgan (Tim Thomerson) joins the fray, but Burnham is being undermined by a traitor within her inner circle. As she runs out of options and co-workers, Burnham decides on a last-ditch effort to destroy Viper with a magnetic impulse; if she fails, Viper will venture from its new home in a radioactive cave, reproduce and dominate our planet. This scientific blunder thriller proves that you can teach a new breed of alien some old tricks, and director Jim Wynorski uses every opportunity to shout "boo!" at sci-fi buffs predisposed to this kind of thrill.
