This gruesomely compelling story of personal alien takeover is more than just an expanded, R-rated episode of TV's "The X Files." While making love one night, ER doctor Craig Burton (Arnold Vosloo) and his wife Sherry (Jillian McWhirter) are interrupted by a flash of light, and find that 20 minutes have elapsed in an instant. Sherry seems fine — and is later delighted to find that she is pregnant — but Craig has been troubled ever since that night, and asks his psychiatrist, Dr. Lamarche (Lindsay Crouse), to hypnotize him. He recalls that he and Sherry were assaulted by alien beings and becomes convinced that something is wrong with Sherry's baby. His suspicions seem confirmed when, during a routine ultrasound, an electrical surge gives attending Dr. Wetherly (Wilford Brimley) a fatal heart attack. Sherry is afflicted with agonizing cramps and horrific nightmares, but suddenly develops an intense protectiveness toward her developing child. Even after Dr. Lamarche hypnotizes her and she realizes that she was indeed impregnated by extraterrestrials, Sherry insists on carrying the baby to term. Craig enlists the aid of alien conspiracy theorist Dr. Clavell (Brad Dourif), and together they spirit Sherry to the hospital, intending to take care of matters once and for all. Fast becoming one of the most dependable practitioners of independent horror films, director Brian Yuzna is in fine, unsettling form with PROGENY. The story (co-written by Yuzna's longtime collaborator, RE-ANIMATOR's Stuart Gordon) doesn't wring many surprises out of its story of alien impregnation, but it develops believably and with a commendable straight face. The tension is heightened by Yuzna's imaginative direction, as he makes creative use of camera angles and framing to emphasize the (literal) alienation of his characters. leave a comment --Michael Gingold
