The Prince Of Peace: Review

This film is an unashamed commercial for a pageant held annually by the Lawton Congregational Church of Lawton, Oklahoma. Every Easter, a reenactment of Holy Week is held in the foothills of the Wichita Mountains and someone decided that filming this passion play would be a great way to make money. The first portion of the film is a highly fictionalized history of how the pageant began in 1926. This portion is poorly put together and stocked with characters who do no justice to the sincerity of the pageant's originators. The second half is a filmed record of the passion play itself, which is infinitely less saccharine than the preceding portions. While the film doesn't offer the greatest portrait of Jesus, the actors do give some credibility and sincerity to their roles. At its New York opening, every last money-making gimmick possible was used. At intermission, "souvenir programs" were peddled from the stage to eager buyers. Also on the program was ONE TOO MANY, a short dealing with the ever-popular theme of evangelists: demon alcohol. leave a comment
