Every boxing movie cliche imaginable gets its turn in the ring in this drama about a failed pugilist determined to mold his sons into champions. Mexican-American Arturo Ortega's (Jimmy Smits) dreams of a big-time boxing career are dashed in 1977, when his unscrupulous manager puts him up against a far more experienced fighter who creams him. Thirteen years later, he's a factory worker who sees boxing as a way for his sons to escape poverty and discrimination. Or so Ortega tells his wife, Rita (Maria Del Mar); she suspects that he's also trying to live out his own failed ambitions through the youngsters. The elder two, not yet adolescents, are already making waves on the state's Silver Gloves circuit. But the pressure of being trained by their dad is already creating tensions, and 10 years later they've developed into volatile rifts that threaten to break up the "Fighting Ortegas." Handsome Sonny (Jon Seda), the eldest, is sensible and disciplined; he works hard and fights with his head. Hot-headed middle son Jimmy (Clifton Collins Jr.), likes to play to the crowd; he's always borne the brunt of his father's frustrations and seethes with unspoken anger. Baby Johnny (Ernesto Hernandez) is utterly devoted to his dad; at 17, he's too young to turn pro, but he clearly has the skills and killer instinct of a champion. As the Ortegas begin attracting national attention, slick promoter Nick Everson (Ron Perlman) tries to entice the boys away from their father, promising money, airtime and access to coveted title bouts. Screenwriter Phil Berger, an award-winning New York Times sportswriter, knows the business of boxing, whose colorful personalities and behind-the-scenes machinations feature prominently in his screenplay. He's not on such sure footing with character and plot development; despite excellent performances all around, the actors can't overcome the script's limitations. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
