A fascinating thriller that was mostly ignored at the time of its release, this is a fine film with a terrific performance by Tuesday Weld. Perkins is again a mentally unstable young man. As a youth, after a fight with his aunt, he kills the woman by burning down her house, though he claims he didn't know she was inside. As the film opens, he's recently been released from prison and is being watched carefully by parole officer Randolph. He gets a job with a lumber company and meets Weld, a pert high-school student. To impress her, he tells her he's with the CIA and in town to investigate nasty business at the lumber company. The two soon begin a relationship, though Weld's domineering mother, Garland, thinks Perkins is a nut and tells her daughter to stay away from him. It isn't long before Perkins finds that Weld's sweet face hides a killer's psyche, and he finds himself caught in a murder wrap as he is cleverly manipulated by the calculating Weld. It's up to the wily Randolph to figure out what really happened. This was Noel Black's directorial debut, and he maintains a brisk pace and a necessary level of tension throughout. Perkins, of course, is fine in the kind of role he excels at, but it's Weld's performance that really makes the film something special. She is superb as the pretty young thing whose exterior cloaks an ice-cold killer. With this film and her fine performances in such movies as SOLDIER IN THE RAIN; THE CINCINNATI KID; and WHO'LL STOP THE RAIN?, she consistently proved herself to be an actress of depth who is much more than a pretty face and a silly name.
