Norville is a young English black man whose parents are emigrants from the Caribbean. Even though he has no trace of an island accent, speaks "proper" English, and has adopted white ways, he feels the racial pressures of his English environment. His character is contrasted with that of
his island parents, his militant brother, and the young blacks he refuses to associate with. Britain's first all-black film, unfortunately, does not deliver what the script promises due to material that was dated even at the time this was filmed, stereotyped white and black characters, and a too
long running time.
