1936, Movie, NR, 80 mins

Wilcoxon stars as a lawyer who drops out of society after getting fed up with his environment and way of life. He soon hooks up with Furness, forgetting about his previous marriage to Brent. The story, suggested by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Liberty Magazine, was reportedly better than what wound up on the screen, but it is typical of Republic Studios' commendable record on nonseries films, which leaned heavily on action and pacing and were usually quite successful. This is one of the nine identifiable films written by Nathanael West, who loathed his screen work so much that he went on to write the classic pessimistic novel on Hollywood, The Day of the Locust. leave a comment
