This semi-autobiographical $750,000 feature, which played festivals and received very limited US theatrical distribution, marked the writing and directing debut of M. Night Shyamalan, who also stars. American college student Dev Raman (Shyamalan) takes part in a student exchange program to please his mother, who feels a trip to India might help her rebellious son straighten up and act right. Cocky and thoroughly Westernized, Dev experiences severe culture shock in his ancestral homeland: He may look Indian, but he couldn't be more alien to his fellow students if he were a blond-heaired, blue-eyed surfer. Dev makes a friend in Sunjay (Mike Muthu), who tries to help him navigate the treacherous social and educational waters, but the hard-headed Dev generally ignores Sunjay's advice, with predictably unfortunate results. An ambitious debut that earned the American Film Institute's first-ever First Film Award, Shyamalan's coming-of-age tale was inspired by his own first visit to India; though born in the Madras city of Pondicherry, Shyamalan was brought to the US as an infant and raised in Penn Valley, PA. Much of the financing came from Shyamalan's family, and while the film was little seen and made no money, it contains many thematic elements that resurface in the writer-director's later work and helped launch his career. leave a comment
