Some of the biggest western stars of the time are brought together in the first of THE THREE MESQUITEER series, which was later to have John Wayne among its ranks of heroes. This one is basically a formula western, with Carey, Gibson, and Williams buying the ranch of a man killed by crooked town official Hardy, who wants the ranch for himself. Hardy sends a hired gun to take care of the new ranchers, but when Carey outdraws the gunman, Tyler, he joins forces with the threesome to fight off Hardy and restore the town to lawfulness. Shaky direction is glossed over by the many action sequences and the fine cast, much at ease in the roles they had to play. This was the second of two "Three Mesquiteer" stories filmed before Republic took over the series, and the first "Mesquiteer" film to show all three cowboys onscreen. In the first "Mesquiteer" film the year before, LAW OF THE 45s, only two of the characters from the book had been used. leave a comment
