Former underground director Robert Downey's follow up to PUTNEY SWOPE (1969), based on own his 1961 Off-Broadway play The Comeuppance, revolves around a motley group of abandoned canines played by unconstumed actors. Trapped in a dog pound, they're all killing time and hoping against hope that they'll be adopted. The dogs include a broken-down racing greyhound (Antonio Fargas), a pregnant pekinese (Lucille Rogers), an aging boxer (Stan Gottlieb) and a yapping chihuahua (Lawrence Wolf), plus a haughty cat (Ching Yeh) and a very confused penguin (Harry Rigby); they're all afraid that nothing awaits them but the doggie gas chamber. Can you say, "metaphor for the human condition"? Downey's wife, Elsie, plays a mutt and their five-year-old son, Robert Downey, Jr. made his movie debut as a puppy. The jokes fly thick and fast, right up to the sucker-punch ending. leave a comment
