Styles is an unemployed ex-convict drifting around England looking for the gang who framed him on a counterfeiting charge. At a charity auction, he sells his services as a butler for five pounds. It turns out that the five-pound note Gunn uses to buy him is a fake. He confronts her father (Allenby) with his discovery and accuses him of being responsible for his jail sentence.
