Mundane story has suave Cortez as a government postal inspector trying to nail nightclub owner Lugosi for the theft of a bag of mail. Lugosi has stolen the mail in a desperate attempt to raise money to pay back a loan shark he fears may kill him. Lugosi now posesses, along with an assortment of letters, such useless contraptions sold through the mail as electric hair growers and rheumatism cures. A romance develops between Ellis, a singer for Lugosi, and Loring, Cortez' younger brother; this proves more interesting than the hackneyed main plot. Neither Cortez nor Lugosi seem to exert much energy on this project in which Universal attempted to glamorize another branch of the US government, the postal inspectors, following Warner Brothers' success with its G-man cycle, though the intent was obviated by the torrid romance subplot between Ellis and Loring. The film did, however, manage to alert the audience to the endless items of worthless junk offered for sale to a gullible public and for which the postal inspector is eternally on the watch. There is also a chase through rising flood waters in which, for economy's sake, newsreel flood scenes of devastation in Pennsylvania and New England at the time were used. leave a comment
