Portrait Of Hell

Set in 10th-century Japan, Nakadai plays a stubborn painter who, refusing to allow his daughter to see his Korean apprentice, banishes the young man from the house. The girl then flees to the court of the ruler, Nakumura, who tells Nakadai he may only have his daughter back if Nakadai agrees to paint a mural. Nakadai complies by producing a vision of hell. In the battle of wills that follows between the two headstrong personalities, both men are driven to suicide.
