Nicole Kidman is superb as Isabel Archer, a 19th-century heiress on her own in Europe who falls prey to two conniving fellow Americans: the mysterious and seductive Madame Merle (Barbara Hershey), and her "friend," the amoral dilettante Gilbert Osmond (John Malkovich).
