Film adaptation of Joyce's autobiographical novel about an Irish youth's journey into manhood, and his problems in breaking away from his strict Catholic upbringing. Although the director uses visual representation in place of much of the stream-of-consciousness of the novel, the film manages to incorporate much of the novel's ideology but in doing so falls into the trap of long monologues with little action taking place. The actors are all top-notch, and the photography of the Irish countryside is breathtaking. leave a comment
