Basically a contrived story designed to cash in on Fox's greatest box-office attraction of the time, Shirley Temple, POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL casts the moppet as Barbara, the daughter of widowed, wealthy soap manufacturer Richard Barry (Michael Whalen). When it's suggested that Barbara should go to school, her nurse packs her off to the train station, but is involved in an accident on the way. This gives Barbara the chance to imitate her favorite heroine from the stories she has been reading, and she takes off on her own, tagging along with an organ grinder to his rooming house, claiming to be an orphan. She meets Jerry and Jimmy Dolan (Alice Faye and Jack Haley), a married song-and-dance team who incorporate the tot into their routine after seeing her dance. Little Barbara's charm helps get the duo a job on the radio show of soap manufacturer Simon Peck (Claude Gillingwater), her father's rival; later, she is reunited with her dad when he comes to court Peck's secretary (Gloria Stuart). Eventually the two companies merge, using the singing talents of Barbara and the Dolans in their advertising. Temple contributes her usual charm to this picture, but the other performers are placed in the background--Faye and Haley don't appear until almost halfway through the film. A new young singer made quite an impression on audiences in his 80 seconds of screen time, singing "When I'm with You"; it was the first of four films Tony Martin was to appear in with Faye. All production values are of the highest standard. Songs include: "Oh My Goodness," "Buy a Bar of Barry's," "Wash Your Necks with a Cake of Peck's," "Military Man," "When I'm with You," "But Definitely," and "You've Gotta Eat Your Spinach, Baby" (Mack Gordon, Harry Revel). leave a comment
