Self-proclaimed "King of Schlock" Waters toned down his usual vulgarity in this parody of suburbia, which introduced a new gross-out format, "Odorama." (A scratch-and-sniff card was handed out at the door, and numbers on the screen directed patrons to sample the very-unpleasant smells at the appropriate sequence.) Divine is a housewife and mother to a family of selfish and ungrateful misfits. Her husband runs a porno theater while carrying on with his secretary, and her children are horrid (the glue-sniffing son is a slave to his foot fetish; the daughter runs around and gets pregnant by a punk--real-life punk rock star Stiv Bators). Divine's life improves when kitschy Hunter arrives, however. The biting satire and absurd situations in Waters' movies always dwell self-consciously on how media images and stereotypes affect viewers' notions of reality. POLYESTER is much more cliche-ridden than his other films, however, and so is less successful as satire. Although this effort comes closer to the mainstream than any Waters' film to date (the relatively gentle HAIRSPRAY would be his breakthrough in that area), POLYESTER still manages enough grotesque scenes to turn the toughest filmgoer's stomach, and the cast of Waters regulars is up (or down, depending on your tastes) to the occasion. leave a comment
