Ever since Mary Pickford filmed the silent version of this book in 1920, the name "Pollyanna" has become English vernacular meaning someone who is a die-hard optimist. This time Pollyanna (Hayley Mills) is an orphan who comes to live with her Aunt Polly (Jane Wyman), a wealthy woman in a small 1912 town. The village is filled with nay-sayers and depressing townsfolk, but Pollyanna soon changes matters by always managing to find something good in every situation, seeing the bright side of even the blackest occurrences. Although the townspeople are initially reluctant to share in her optimism, they are eventually won over, even coming to Pollyanna's aid when she is temporarily paralyzed and can no longer find any good in life. leave a comment
