Montand plays a tough detective, much in the vein of DIRTY HARRY, who falls in love with Sandrelli, evasive because of her affair with Perier, Montand's boss. When Perier kills the girl because she wants to leave him, Montand is assigned the case. The only person the clues point to is himself, but he eventually puts together the pieces that point the finger at Perier, a man married to the cripple Signoret. A fine cast adds depth to a tightly woven script adorned with psychological undertones. leave a comment
