An extremely bitter film that focuses on moonshiners in an impoverished area of Ireland, taking the view that the Irish cannot resist the bottle and that they possess limited goals and imagination. Of the film--which may be the only film ever made in Gaelic-- its maker, Quinn, says its aim was to rectify some of the "sentimental falsifications" perpetuated by John Ford in THE QUIET MAN. Unfortunately, far from being realized, this aim succeeds only in provoking invidious comparisons. leave a comment
